McKinley Charter School was opened to offer a unique option for students who had not been successful in any of the other at-risk or special education options offered by the Eau Claire Area School District.

McKinley serves 24 students at a time in the Credit Component, 73 students at a time in the Competency Component, approximately 600 students per year in the Detention Component, approximately 225 students per year in the Jail Component, and up to eight students at a time in the Home Bound Component.

The Credit Component uses integrated, thematic, and community based instruction along with more traditional methods. Other components of the school rely heavily on one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction.

The behavior and discipline programs at McKinley Charter School are based on several models including the reality therapy methods of William Powers, William Glasser and Diane Gossen and on new research related to how the brain functions. Teachers consider the impact that this information has on how we teach, how children learn and why people behave the way that they do. The school also uses a Deming site based decision making model with both staff and students.

Yes, you must reside in the Eau Claire or Altoona school district to attend McKinley Charter School. Students in the Northwest Regional Detention Center and the Eau Claire County Jail are considered residents of the Eau Claire Area School District while detained.
Do I need an application form from my home school to be accepted into the Credit Component of McKinley Charter School?
Yes, to enter the Credit Component of the school, you need an application form from the Associate Principal of your school.
How old do I have to be to attend the Competency Component?
You must be at least seventeen years of age and have less than twelve earned credits to attend the Competency Component of McKinley Charter School.
How long does it take to complete a Competency Component diploma?
The amount of time it takes to complete a Competency Component diploma depends on the skill level you have achieved before attending McKinley and the amount of time and effort you put into your studies.
How soon after enrolling in the McKinley Competency Component can I graduate if I complete all other graduation requirements?
You can graduate either the January or May after you turn 18 years of age or after your ninth grade class has graduated from high school and after you have completed all graduation requirements.
When are graduation ceremonies held at McKinley Charter School?
Graduation ceremonies are held in January and May each year. Although diplomas are only handed out at those times, transcripts are available and can be sent to an employer, a technical college, a university, or the military at any time.
